more wall, less weeds
Yesterday, Kenny's dad came over to help turn the two giant holes in our wall back into actual walls. There's some finishing-up work to be done (like sanding and painting) but the guys did a great job and it's nice to have the appearance of a home not currently under construction.
While they worked inside, some strange force possessed me to actually work....outside.
I'm actually kinda proud of myself, I pulled a bunch of weeds, cut back the grass climbing up my hibiscus, cleared out what like to be a flowerbed (if I ever planted anything in it that survived), and finally edged my walkway. The edging in particular should be impressive; I'd like to note that I didn't use anything fancy like an edger. I don't own an edger, however I *do* own... pruning shears. But it looks much better outside, and I'm going to try very very hard to maintain some semblance of lawn maintenance.
John (my neighbor) saw me start working in the yard and came over, a little concerned... he wanted to make sure that I knew to drink plenty of water while I worked. I thought it was sort of a silly thing to come tell me, until I realized that John probably thinks I neglect the yard because I don't know how to maintain it, rather than that I'm lazy and complacent. I definitely appreciate that he's giving me the benefit of the doubt. It would have been more useful, though, if he'd reminded me to wear sunscreen... several hours outside in a tank top have resulted in me being burned to a crisp. I don't think I'll make that mistake again, it's fairly miserable in my blistered skin today.
Next weekend I'm going to try and tackle the backyard, we've got a fairly good overgrowth of weeds back there, too. All of our intentionally-put-there plants are doing great there, but I suppose they'd show up better if they weren't overshadowed by the fast-growing other stuff.
In rat news, it seems like they've moved out of my home and taken up residence elsewhere. We haven't heard rattie scrambling noises in a few days, and Mr.Kitty (bachelor cat next door) has taken a definite interest in my backyard. Seems like the rats are still coming to raid my bird and squirrel food, which is fine, but at least they're bunking somewhere else.
I'm not sure why I'm awake this early (I actually got up at 6:45am) but I've been messing around for an hour and I suppose I could actually seek the accomplishment of something more worthwhile than waiting for my pants to dry...
